Respond Mother F****r!

Yeah, it’s an annoying word – responsive. We see it everywhere, it’s on everybody’s lips, and sometimes, it would be awesome for it to become a person so we could smash a chair in his face… But do you know why responsive is such a big deal? Because it’s utterly important! And no matter how irritating is to constantly hear about it, it’s more grievously for a website to not possess adaptive capabilities.

Unveiling its usefulness

Let’s start with a comparison… You have a glass: it has a good grip; feels good in your hand; it’s not too big, not too small either. Any time you’ll be using your glass you’ll have a sense of satisfaction due to drinking just enough liquid from it. “Gosh, this glass it’s awesome! I can drink anything from it, regardless if I’m inside, in the commodity of my home, or outside, facing a blizzard.” Stupid comparison… But no matter, let’s go ahead with it! Now hand out the glass to your toddler… Do you think the glass will leave the same impression to your kid? No! Instead, he or she is going to find the glass too big, slippery, too heavy, hard to drink from it… But what if the glass would become smaller, while maintaining all the other properties?

The age of shapeshifters

A while back, people were building more than just one version for a website – the “normal” version which you would have received while accessing the site from a desktop computer and the “mobile” version which you would have received while browsing the web from a mobile device.

Those days are gone. It was a temporary solution and, if I might say so, not too bright. It had its limitations, many by the number. But today we have this thing called responsive, which can (almost) ensure an optimal viewing experience – resizing, panning, and scrolling across a wide range of devices.

A responsive website will adapt to its environment by being built on a fluid framework. So no matter from what kind of device it will be accessed, the information you want to be sent to your users will be accessible, visible, in a comprehensible form.

Mobile first

People are shifting, more and more, from desktops to mobile devices like tablets and smartphones. It’s the age of mobile devices.

So you need to start with mobile as your groundstone. Develop and optimize your website for mobile gizmos and build more from that point on. If someone will access your website from a tablet, for example, and your website won’t be displayed correctly… this will only lead to a higher bounce rate.

Paraphrasing a well known idiom: if users will not go to the website, the website must go to the users.
